Totes Gebirge
Definition:
Well-established name for the mighty limestone high alpine massif of the plateau mountain type in the N of Ausseer and Mitterndorf basin as well as Mittlerem Ennstal, which culminates in Gr. Priel, 2515 m, on the Styrian side in Gr. Hochkasten, 2389 m. Main rock formers are triadic limestones, which are also responsible for the intensive karstification. The eastern part (in the E of the Salzsteigjoch) was highlighted as a sub-area under the likewise well established name Warscheneckstock (Warscheneck, 2388 m, highest point on the Styrian side of its SW summit, 2367 m). Like the central part of the Tote Gebirge, some smaller mountains belong to this sub-area, but most of them are quite rugged. (Author: Prof. Mag. Dr. Gerhard Karl LIEB)
