Middle Muerztal
Definition:
Well established name for the Muerz valley between the narrowness of Wartberg (breakthrough valley) and Muerzzuschlag. This includes not only the narrower valley area, which is made up of fluvial and fluvioglacial sediments, but also the peripheral, especially on the southern side of the valley, gently undulating hills of tertiary loose material, which also identify the area as an elongated inner-alpine basin. The Upper Muerztal is the valley area above Muerzzuschlag, which is located entirely within the Northern Alps, but which does not appear as a separate sub-area in the present structure due to the lack of a corresponding width.
